Hello, my name is Pauline Cole and I am the Pupil Support Officer at Prospect Bank School. Many of you will be familiar with me but maybe not with my role within the team at school.
Pupil support officers (PSOs) are employed across schools within Edinburgh but can have very varied roles depending on the school’s needs. My role at Prospect Bank is parental engagement – making it easier to have a connection between home and school. This support may look like the following:
- One to one meeting with parent/carers to discuss needs (toileting, behaviours, transitions, eating to name a few!)
- Signposting to agencies who will be able to offer more advice and support if needed.
- Supplying visuals or methods of communication to support the learner and family.
- Supporting learners and parents/carers on appointments out with school.
- Attending child planning meetings as a support from parents/carers.
- Supporting and observing the learner in class and working in collaboration with the class team and senior management to find a solution to a problem that works for everyone.
- Hosting coffee mornings with parents/cares. This is a relaxed time to catch up with others and chat. We have supports joining us from time to time (speech therapy, funding advice, health and wellbeing advice and support)
- Holding workshops with parents/carers on various topics. This academic year we have been focussing on communication. Speech therapy are attending these workshops too giving much valued advice.
- Most importantly, providing a space for parents/carers to be listened to and be supported without judgement.
I am contactable by email (Pauline.Cole@prospectbank.edin.sch.uk) or call the school and I will get back to you as soon as it is possible.
